A Town Called Awesome

When I think of Belgium I think of waffles, amazing beer and Hercule Poirot. Now I can add “A Town Called Panic” to the list of things I like about Belgium. Last week the San Francisco International Animation Festival had a screening of this film and I am glad I had the opportunity to see it.

“A Town Called Panic” is a strange stop-motion film that demonstrates that not everything has to be animated with CGI. The movie is based on a TV series that has achieved a cult following in Belgium and it’s easy to see why. It’s tres bizarre, but honestly I haven’t laughed this much during a film in a long time.

Cowboy, Indian and Horse all live happily together in a very small town. Indian and Cowboy, who share a room and sleep in twin beds, forget that it is Horse’s birthday. They set about to get him a gift, but of course everything goes awry and panic ensues. After all, it is called “A Town Called Panic.”

Note: some of the animated shorts can be found on YouTube if you want to get an idea.
