Hello! I’ve been busy, still drawing and writing, but for other things. A new and exciting gaming blog has popped up and yours truly is taking part. Behold! Gamer Melodico!

Is “Melodico” a word? Maybe not now, but hopefully soon. It should be right up there with “truthiness.” The site is new, but wow, talk about internet traffic. This post by main man Kirk drew a ton of well-deserved attention for his satire of Mass Effect 2. If you are into games, then you will enjoy the site I think. I’ve done a little writing and I am doing a little drawing as well for Gamer Melodico. This is my first drawing for it, and the character is from Bioshock which is an extremely creepy game. The idea was game characters trying to make their way into film and then being mis-cast. This character’s name is “Big Daddy,” so there ya go. I feel the need to explain the drawing more here, since not everyone is into games. In the end, I think the drawing is ok. I got to play some with patterns and paper textures and that is always fun. I have some personal criticisms regarding this drawing though that I hope to address.

Welcome to my new home. I am very happy to be sportin’ a new look with a new hosting place that has been wicked awesome. What is great is how much I will be able to expand on this baby over time. Fastest Illustration Friday drawing ever. “Renewal” is the topic this week, which is fitting being the new year and all. I definitely feel renewed after a nice long bath. The only thing missing are some candles and maybe a little Enya lofting through the airwaves. You know you like Enya.

What a year, huh? 2009 was a year of extremes for me and those close to me. I appreciated the highs, but wow, talk about lows. I am forever thankful for the good times this year. I know a lot of people are very eager to put the old year behind them, hence my idea for this drawing.

So, I wish you a very healthy and happy 2010. Weren’t we supposed to have flying cars by now? Damn.

Playing Mr. Roboto

By chance, I saw this Gamasutra article about the ten best independent games of 2009. That lead me to this little game by a Czech design studio.

Machinarium is about a little robot that has been kicked out of his robot city. The game itself is a simple point-and-click adventure game that has a good number of puzzles to bend your brain. What sets this game apart is how absolutely gorgeous it is. The characters are charming, the music and sound effects provide a great atmosphere and the artwork is something else. I can only imagine the time that went into rendering out each little part of the city. Every time I get to a new part of the game I have to stop and take in the artwork.

The game is currently on sale until Christmas for a mere ten bucks. It runs on Mac, Linux, PC and it comes with another game, some artwork and the soundtrack to both games. I am listening to the soundtrack right now as I write this.

Ten dollars well spent, I say, well spent!

The Case of Kirk Hamilton and the Very Happy Pants

A friend was nice enough to ask me to do an illustration for a song of his, and I was very happy to take up the challenge. Let me tell ya, Kirk Hamilton is a talented musician/composer/teacher/bon vivant that plays pretty much every instrument, although I have yet to hear him rock a didgeridoo. Get to it Kirk! Anyway, he wrote an infectious little tune called “Happy Pants,” and it was a lot of fun visualizing a drawing to go with it. The initial idea was an anthropomorphic pair of very happy pants, but it wasn’t working for me and I finally drew a silly NSFW sketch to illustrate my problems. Then I thought of Happy Pants as not being just a pair of pants but maybe an exceptionally happy character known as Happy Pants. He would be the strange old guy in town that was always cheerful, making the rounds saying hello to everyone and is maybe just a little bit off. Everyone appreciates Happy Pants!

Listen to “Happy Pants” and enjoy the goodness that is Kirk’s blog. Oh, and feel free to let me know what you think of the pairing of his song to my drawing.
